Ways to recycle plastic in the Philippines

As plastics largely contribute to pollution, some groups are holding donation drives to recycle waste.

Here are some that accept clean and dry plastic waste for recycling.

This article is an excerpt from CNN Philippines.

1. Green Antz Builders

Green Antz is a waste management company that collects used, dry and clean plastics. The waste is recycled to create bricks for construction projects. Some drop-off points also accept cartons.

The company accepts plastic waste through collection stations in malls. It also offers pick up for a fee.

2. Basura to Ayuda

Barangay San Antonio in Pasig City offers aid or "ayuda": a kilogram of rice for three kilograms of clean and dry plastic waste. It also accepts ecobricks - plastic bottles tightly filled with shredded plastic - used beverage cartons, used oil, and garment waste. Only barangay residents will receive rice, but everyone is free to donate waste.

Drop off point is in front of the Megaplaza condominium near Robinsons Galleria.

The program also accepts food waste converted into compost. Drop off point is at the San Antonio Urban Garden.

3. The Plastic Flamingo

The Plastic Flamingo or The Plaf is a social enterprise that collects waste and converts it into "eco-lumber" or planks to be used as building material. The product is created by shredding the plastic waste and molding it into the lumber.

"Quality reclaimed siya. Ibig sabihin, it is waterproof, rot-proof, maintenance-free, recycled, and recyclable at masasabi nating ang workability niya ay pwedeng ikumpara sa kahoy," The Plaf Communication & Marketing Associate Allison Tan said of their eco-lumber during an interview with CNN Philippines' Newsroom Ngayon on Friday.

[Translation: It is quality reclaimed, meaning it is waterproof, rot-proof, maintenance-free, recycled, and recyclable and we can say its workability is comparable to wood.]

Donors can drop off all types of plastic in a number of drop boxes, mostly in Metro Manila, including The Plaf warehouse in Muntinlupa City.

4. My Basurero

My Basurero is a project by Basic Environmental Systems and Technologies, Inc. that exchanges donated plastic, paper and metal, with cash back points. A kilogram of waste gets "environmental points" that can be used to pay for products from the platform's mobile redemption store or any of partner outlets which include shops selling milk tea, burgers, and other food items.

The recyclable waste will be used to create new items such as storage boxes, pails, pots, and laundry baskets. Donors or what the program calls "eco-warriors" can bring their items to the MBE-C Brixton Technology Center in Barangay Kapitolyo, Pasig City and the MBE-C in Quezon City Hall.
